Since its inception, CHISEL has sought to better understand human-human and human-computer interaction (HCI) within rich social contexts. Our aim is to design optimized user experiences, particularly immersive and interactive technologies, to improve the quality of life of people, particularly those on the margin. We study the way cultural background, religion, socioeconomic status, and previous exposure to technology shape users. At CHISEL, we practice an empathetic approach towards experience design, by targeting the intersection between HCI, design, and psychology. Building on various HCI philosophies and practices, we use tools such as Design Thinking, Iterative Design and User Centered Design to create useful and helpful products for diverse user groups in Pakistan. We believe that it is imperative that the multicultural environment of the user be kept in mind when designing specifically for under-developed regions, as products built for the western world do not necessarily translate successfully in developing countries!
CHISEL delivers on its promise of hands-on learning opportunities through its state-of-the-art labs.
